Controls System Engineer

Job Description

The Controls Systems Engineer is responsible for developing/designing machine and process control systems and implementing the finished product as required by the customer. Because of our focus on families and the proximity of our customers, travel is much lower than similar roles at other companies. A blend of field and/or remote work is expected up to 40% of the time, overnight travel <15%.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consistent delivery of a positive customer experience as evident through customer request for your specific service and top scores on customer surveys
  • Prioritizes work schedule effectively.
  • Communicates openly with customers in an effective, positive manner.
  • Assist project managers from definition to installation and customer acceptance.
  • Maintain cost and schedule tracking of projects against quoted price and delivery.
  • Develop and maintain project milestones, parts lists and ordering, and electrical schematics.
  • Provide communication to customers, panel shop employees, the account manager, and other team members.
  • Lead and/or support start-up of systems in the shop and at the customer site.
  • Perform programming and development of PLC, temperature controls systems, drive systems, and HMI systems.
  • Act as a leader in one area of technology used by the company.
  • Capable of leading the training classes offered to customers of Sure Controls in their area of expertise.
  • Willingness to assist Sure Controls associates.
  • Accountable to committed tasks.
  • Contribute to a positive P&L statement.
  • Participate in after-hours and be on-call 1-2 weeks per year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Functional Technical Skills

  • The Controls Systems Engineer should have exposure to the following disciplines:
  • Rockwell Automation PLCs (ControlLogix, SLC, PLC5, CompactLogix)
  • Siemens Automation PLCs (S7)
  • SSD Drive Systems
  • Rockwell Powerflex Drive Systems
  • SCADA/HMI Applications (Wonderware, Ignition, Rockwell FactoryTalk, Red Lion Crimson)
  • Eurotherm and RKC Controllers
  • CAD Development Software (AutoCAD/ePlan)
  • System troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Industry Standards (NEC, NFPA 79, NFPA 70, UL)
  • Code development and interface with automation equipment: Omron, Precise, Mecademic, Asyril, Vision Systems
  • Engineering Skills Include:
  • PLC Programming/Design
  • HMI Programming/Design
  • Temperature Controls 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Some college, with focus on Electrical Engineering or similar. 

Experience and/or Training: 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical components. Strong Communication skills (listening, questioning, speaking), Time Management skills. Experience working with customers and vendors.

Licenses/Certificates: N/A

Technology/Equipment: Computing/Software Skills including Microsoft Office Suite, and electrical design software.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Associates or BA/BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

Experience and/or Training: 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical components. Strong Communication skills (listening, questioning, speaking), Time Management skills. Experience working with customers and vendors.

Licenses/Certificates: N/A

Technology/Equipment: Computing/Software Skills including Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Eplan, and Solidworks.

Physical and Mental Demands

Sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Speak and hear communications.

Occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Occasional travel (local, national, international) is required.

May be required to work hours outside of the typical 7:30a.m. – 4:30 p.m. day., and on-call on some weekends (2 – 3 per year).

Working Environment

The noise level in the work environment is from moderate to loud. Occasional remote work may be an option for this position. Occasional travel is required. May be required to work hours outside of the typical 7:30 am -4:30 pm day.
